Parsons Branch Road is a historic, gravel road that offers a less crowded scenic drive through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Located in the Cades Cove area, this 8-mile one-way road takes visitors from near the Cades Cove Visitor Center out to Highway 129, along the park's western boundary.Originally constructed in 1838, Parsons Branch Road has been a vital route for over 180 years, providing access for Cades Cove residents to the Little Tennessee River for trading goods. The road was closed in 2016 due to safety concerns from numerous dead trees but was reopened in May 2022 after extensive restoration efforts.
Driving along Parsons Branch Road, you'll enjoy scenic views, opportunities to spot wildlife, and access to popular hiking trails like Gregory Bald,known for its stunning flame azaleas in the summer. The road's gravel surface and narrow, winding path make it an adventurous drive, best suited for high clearance vehicles. It's open seasonally from April to mid-November.
